Felt change(S) (if any) by having a higher representation of women in leadership roles
Banasthali Vidyapith, the world‟s largest residential university for women and also the second-best in the world as per THE World University Rankings, is a premier institution of women that had women in leadership roles since its inception in 1935. Women constitute about three-fourths of the staff and when it comes to leadership roles it is not only that the Vice-Chancellor is a woman but most of the Deans, Heads of Departments, Coordinators, and Conveners of different cells and committees in Banasthali Vidyapith are women, taking the representation of women in leadership roles to over 75%. The unique educational ideology of Banasthali Vidyapith, Panchmukhi Shiksha comprising physical, practical, aesthetic, intellectual, and moral education has been instrumental in nurturing women leaders in all walks of life including many leaders in Banasthali also.
Some of the felt changes are enumerated here
Eighty-six years back, Banasthali Vidyapith started by training five young girls and one of them went on to become the director of Vidyapith and were also the first woman President of the Association of Indian Universities. Not only this, Banasthali has given many “firsts” to the nation like the first woman Speaker of Parliament Smt Meira Kumar, the first woman speaker of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly Smt. Sumitra Singh, the first woman Asian Marathon champion Smt. Sunita Godara, the first Indian woman editor in Hollywood Ms. Anuradha Singh, and more recently the first woman fighter pilot to fly a fighter jet solo, Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi, the list is long and includes big names in politics, corporate, education, sports, fine arts, and bureaucracy. This is corroborative evidence supporting “women leaders foster more women leaders”, a farsighted practice, the fruits of which both the institution and the society are reaping.
The women Deans and Heads have contributed significantly in resource mobilization as they are more at ease convincing the donor agencies about dedication and commitment to any project and since women are naturally equipped with building better relations, these women leaders have strengthened the bonds with various agencies that have supported the infrastructural growth and development in the institution.
Women leaders have contributed to the better financial health of our institution that has led to better job opportunities for more women, better education facilities for more girls belonging to all strata of society including rural, LIG, SC, ST, and destitute women and girls. Another pleasant change observed lately is through the women-led startups incubated by Banasthali Vidyapith. These enterprising women leaders of about 95 startups have generated 1300+ jobs and have predominantly recruited women.
Women who are playing the leadership roles in various cells and committees of the Vidyapith not only match their male counterparts in intelligence and being innovative but are better than men in being compassionate and organized.
The women leaders of Banasthali Vidyapith symbolize unity and cooperation and they are the reason for the institution always depicting the solidarity of a family. If Banasthali Vidyapith has “redefined women‟, the credit goes to the high proportion of women leaders.
